How to Use Crochet Washcloths

Handmade dishcloths are a great housewarming gift because they are functional and decorative!

You can take crochet dishcloth patterns and expand them to different sizes (if not already written for them) and make a whole matching set of washcloths, dishcloths, hand towels, kitchen towels and more! You will just need to figure out the stitch repeats and then you are off a running!

My personal preference is to use Liob Brand 24/7 Cotton so they can be used for anything. This yarn absorbs well and doesn’t seem to deteriorate so you won’t have little fuzzies left behind when you clean your bathroom mirror.

I do not recommend using acrylic yarn since it does not always have the best absorption and can stretch out.

What Crochet Stitch is Best for Dishcloths?

Use a textured crochet stitch and a durable yarn. A textured crochet stitch will help to scrub any hard to get spots and a durable yarn will hold up best through multiple uses.

I prefer to use a dense stitch for my own crochet dishcloths as I feel that is best for washing dishes. Depending on what I am intending the dish cloths to be used for will dictate the stitch.

If I want to use them specifically for scrubbing dishes then I will choose a more textured stitch.

If I am planning to use them as washcloths for my kids then I go with something a bit more gentle like the moss stitch.

Originally, I made this crocheted dishcloth using Re-Up from Lion Brand (blue in photos) but it has now been discontinued. To make some new ones I chose to use 24/7 Cotton from Lion Brand which in hindsight is a better choice for durability.

Believe it or not, 24/7 softens up quite a bit and feels great on skin but also has good scrubbing power. To me Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is probably the best yarn for this easy crochet washcloth pattern.

Make Any Size Handmade Crochet Dishcloth

This easy project is written for one size but I am about to make it easier with How To Make Any Size tips!

  • The multiple for the star stitch is 2+1 when using this pattern.
  • Using the gauge above this easy stitch has a stitch of guage 15 sts over 4 inches which means you have 3.75 sts per inch. So, if you want a 12 inch wide hand towel you will multiply 12 inches by 3.75 sts per inch and get 45 sts. 45 is a multiple of 2+1 so it works!
  • Then just crochet as many rows as you repeats as you need until you reach your desired length.
